Exfoliation

Exfoliaton

The answer is yes.

Skin exfoliation improves the quality and tone of the skinby assisting in the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. As our skin cells cells renew, old surface cells harden, lose moisture and detach from the skin allowing other cells to be come through. This process also eliminates damaged and contaminated cells that carry pollutants and micro-organisims from the environment. These dead skin cells don'talways fall from our skin's surface. This can cause clogging and congestion. Through professional and at home exfoliation, these dulling skin cells are effectivley removed, and newer cells are revealed for a fresher, healthier apperance.

What is an exfoliant?

An exfoliant is an any agent that removes dead skin cells from the skin's surface to reveal newer, smoother skin that's underneath. When we exfoliate, we automatically cause skin renewal because new cells are stimulated tp push towards the surface to replace the newly removed dead cells.

Physical exfoliants use friction to remove dead skin cells, either through the use of a tool ( such as a brush or a sponge) or a gentle abrasive ( such as corn cob meal, rice , silica granules, or oatmeal ) Depending on the amount of friction and the abrasive used results will vary. Do not use a physical exfoliant when treating acne skin.

Chemical exfoliants smooth skin by dissolving the intercellular " glue" that attaches cells to the surface. Glycolic acids, Retinol, and AHAs produce a chemical reaction to break the bonds of older cells and " digest" them.

Glycolic Acid

This was the first to be used in cosmetic application, and is still wildly used. Glycolic acid is derived from the stems of the sugar cane. It breaks down the " glue " that hold together the skin cells on the skin. Glycolic treatments should be done in a course of weekly for 10 weeks to benfit any of the following conditions. Acne skin

Acne skin produces five times more dead skin cells than other skin conditions, therefore proper exfoliation can benefit acne skin. Glycolic acid help dead skin cells detach, preventing dead skin cells from clogging the follicle and contributing to acne.

Aging skin

When we are young, our skin renews itself roughly every 12-19 days. But as we grow older, this process slows down, as the "glue" that holds the skin cells together becomes denser. The natural process of removal of dead skin cells becomes more difficult, causing a build up that results in dull, thick skin with less tone. Cell renewal takes from 28-35 days in mid age, and up to 90 days in old age. Glycolic is especially effective on prematurely-aged and mature skin, as it stimulates cell renewal faster than the body can on its own.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is an increase in colour by either an increase in melanin, an increase in melanocytes, or is from substance that adds coulour by forming deposits on the skin. Exfoliation helps shed these pigmented more quickly, and will help remove the dead skin cells so ingedients can penetrate hypermentation at its source.

Dry, Dehydrated skins

Alack of moisture in the skin leads to gaps in the cellular barrier. Leaving skin feeling tight and stretched, many tead to overmoisturise, which stick the older skin cells down, leading to a dull, uneven skin tone. Through exfoliation, dying skin cells are effectively removed, and moistrizing and hydrating ingredients can penetrate deeper into the skin to help ease dry and dehydrated skin conditions.
